Advanced Payment Guarantee
When you move, whether it’s within the UK or indeed to or from another country, as long as the move is either collected from or delivered to a UK address, it’s standard practice to pay your removal company in advance. If your mover is a Member of the BAR and you’re a private individual, you can be assured that your pre-payment is protected by an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) scheme.
This means that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong at any point in the move, you are covered. So, when considering other quotations and before committing to any pre-payments, it is worth remembering that every BAR Member is strictly financially vetted and you have the safety net of the APG scheme, so you can have total confidence in using them for your move.
- The total aggregated liability for the scheme for any single Member company failure, and to include consideration for all unfulfilled contracts at the time of the claim, shall be limited to not more than £50,000
- If the work has already commenced, claims are limited to the reasonable costs for completing the work. Any potential claimant is advised to seek guidance from the scheme before accepting a quotation to complete the contracted work.
- The time limit for completing a claim on the scheme shall be not more than 6 calendar months from the date of notification of the insolvency.
- Any proven claim will be settled only after all lodged claims have been fully and finally considered.

It has been brought to the attention of the BAR that a former Member of our Association, Simpsons Removals & Storage Ltd is advising its customers that they have ceased trading although the Company’s status is still shown as ‘Active’ at Companies House. The BAR is currently unsure of the detail of that circumstance and is in communication with the company to establish whether it has simply decided to stop trading or whether in fact it has been placed into liquidation. The scheme from my end has been superb, otherwise I would have been nearly £1000 out of pocket. Was really easy with Green’s completing the move without me having to pay them again and claim off you as for that. I would ensure I always use a BAR company in the future and would tell people about it when planning a move.
