Peter McGimpsey passes department
torch to Michael Dunbar
In a move to futureproof its operations within an ever-changing and highly competitive sector, McGimpsey Removals
has promoted Michael Dunbar to the role of UK Department Head. Michael’s appointment comes after Company
Director Peter McGimpsey entered well-deserved early retirement late last year following three decades in the industry.
As Head of Department Michael is responsible for overseeing departmental expenditure and scheduling the
company’s weekly UK to Ireland services to ensure that each is cost effective and meticulously planned. He acts as a
central point of contact between McGimpsey’s board of directors and its team of move consultants, ensuring that
communications are effectively mediated up and down the company hierarchy.
Michael is also a member of the BAR Young Movers Group Council and is keen to promote removals within the
wider world as a viable and rewarding career for younger generations. He joined the Belfast-based BAR Member as
a school leaver himself in 2005, and across his 15 years’ service has worked in a wide range of roles including
porter, warehouse operative, driver, assistant operations management and move consultant before moving into
management. Since 2014 Michael had been shadowing company co-founder and former head of department
Peter McGimpsey to gain the competencies needed to manage departmental processes as Peter transitioned
“I’d like to thank Peter for teaching me most of what I now know, as well as for the faith that he and the
board of directors has shown me in recent years,” Michael told R&S. “I’d also kindly ask that any BAR Members
consider McGimpsey’s for any work you have; you can rest assured knowing your customers will be treated as one
of our own.”
Bidding farewell to an industry veteran
Peter McGimpsey launched McGimpsey Removals with his brother, Campbell, in 1983. Across his 35-plus years in
the trade, he has played an instrumental role in the development of the company from modest origins to the
internationally renowned brand it is today, including by inaugurating the company’s weekly UK run in 1988.
The two brothers started in business selling fish and vegetables locally out of a Volkswagen Type 2 van (pictured
below right) before specialising in removals shortly after. In 1985 Stephen and Paul McGimpsey joined the company,
which had acquired BAR Membership and expanded internationally by the early 1990s. Rapid growth led the
company to purchase a warehouse in Donaghadee, County Down, and later move into purpose-built premises in
Bangor, near Belfast, in 2002. The company’s self store facility was opened in 2013 – the same year it achieved FIDI
FAIM accreditation – and in December 2018 the firm was sold to Melissa Campbell and Steven Gibbons, the
daughter and son-in-law of Campbell McGimpsey, as part of its succession planning strategy. Campbell, Stephen
and Paul continue to play an active role within the company day to day.
Since retiring, Peter has purchased two boats – one for lobster fishing and one for imbibing the sea views of
Belfast Port – and is offering comprehensive nautical tours to any of the close friends and acquaintances he has had
the pleasure of making across 35 years of business and BAR Conferences.
