Caroline Anthonisz on shouldering
Britannia Thomas Casserly’s Office Manager explains how and why she has
become increasingly involved in the world of removals since joining the industry
part-time just over a decade ago.

R&S: What made you start in
Caroline Anthonisz: I joined the industry in March
2010. My children had grown up and I wanted to make
the most of the newly available hours with a part-time
job that was both close to home and offered me
opportunities to develop my career. I approached my
local firm, Britannia Thomas Casserly’s, and several
phone calls later I was interviewed by the owner, Martin
Thomas. I started off part-time, working 15 hours per
week, and over the years my job has become full-time
as I’ve taken on more and more responsibilities.
R&S: What are your main
responsibilities, and what are the
most challenging and rewarding
parts of the job?
CA: As Office Manager I’m involved in all areas of
operation and have a mixed bag of responsibilities.
Primarily I’m in charge of managing the company’s
accounts (including the payroll), booking the removal
jobs, selling our storage units and overseeing all
international work. I also handle our social media and I
keep the cloud-based computer system running smoothly
with the support of our offsite IT team. I’d say the most
challenging part of the job is making sure that the
admin and removals run smoothly. On the other hand,
what I find most rewarding is seeing a new system come
to fruition from just an idea in our heads to full
implementation. And, of course, receiving great
feedback from happy customers!
R&S: Have you received any
training across your career?
CA: I’ve attended several workshops within the
Britannia network, which were focussed on shipping
and marketing, and I’ve also completed some more
local sessions on effective digital advertising and
use of social media. Prior to taking on my role at
Thomas Casserly’s I was extensively trained in accounts
and payroll management, while more generally I’ve
always been organised, which really helps in my role.
I’m also supported by the knowledge that I can always
ask fellow Britannia member companies for advice and
assistance for any problem I might encounter.
R&S: Does your company have any
specific policies to encourage
women to enter and remain in the
CA: We don’t have any specific policies as such,
although female representation at our firm is strong
since we have two female receptionists and a female
surveyor. In our recruitment processes I’d say we
consider applicants more on the basis of employment
needs rather than on gender.
R&S: What would be your advice
to a woman thinking of taking a
position in the industry?
CA: I think removals is a very rewarding job because it
gives you the opportunity to help people through what
can often be a stressful time in their lives. An added
bonus is that the seasonality of the business
can also mesh in a positive way to your home life
and personal circumstances. While sometimes I
find it more difficult to juggle work and life, more
often than not I have the flexibility to take time off
when I need it.
R&S: Is there anything the BAR can
do to help take women forward in
CA: I’d like to see more training courses that are
structured around administrative systems (such as social
media, telephone selling, basic accounting, appointment
booking, etc.) to help women progress in these
traditionally female roles, as well as more regular
networking meetings for women in removals, either face
to face or as a Facebook group. If there any likeminded
women out there, please do get in touch.
R&S: What are the most important
lessons you have learned over your
CA: Always keep calm under pressure; it’s OK to swear
(under your breath) now and again; and no matter how
stressful a day or week may be, as long as you keep going
it always finds a way of sorting itself out.
