Nowhere does the property price gap look as vast and unbridgeable as it does from Eldon Lane in Co Durham, and over the past 20 years, that gap has grown ever wider.

New research shows just how much Britain’s most expensive homes have soared in value while leaving the cheapest properties behind. According to Savills, 16 areas in England and Wales, the vast majority of them in London and the Home Counties, had an average sale price of more than £1 million in the past three years, the most expensive being the millionaires’ rows of Kensington and Chelsea in inner London, at £2.04 million.
